Hello everyone,
As spotted lanternfly has continued its spread, some vineyards are showing low populations for the first time, while others are dealing with high populations for more that one year. The adults are the most damaging life stage for vineyards; thankfully populations will be brought to a stop by cold weather soon. Some areas have experienced some frosts by now, but this is not likely to have been severe enough to have really killed most adults.
If populations are high, control of adults should continue post harvest. Nutrients removed from the vines at this time will continue to negatively affect vine health. While Brigade has a long preharvest interval, it does have a 2ee label for postharvest use on grapes and hops - it is included in the table posted of effective spotted lanternfly materials (https://www.virginiafruit.ento.vt.edu/SLF_Insecticides.pdf).
Eggs are currently being laid to allow for overwintering. While the legal requirement of the quarantine program is no longer in effect, it is prudent to expect vehicles or other articles before movement beyond the infestation zone (https://www.ento.vt.edu/4-H_Entomology/SpottedLanternfly.html).
More later,
Doug P.
